Blog Optimization 101

Getting your blog out there and seen is the point, right? You want visitors to see your blog so that they can either click on the ads or click through and buy from your site, otherwise whats the point of the blog, right?

So how to get the blog out there. First is to make sure that blog directories and the blog search engines are picking it up. Also link or claim your blog at the social bookmarking sites. To give all fo this a jump start take a look at the following check up list. If your new to blogging and just setting up a blog these are good starting points. if your blog is not performing the ways it should be then the following tips are good for giving your blog a check up.

* It is extremely important that RSS auto-discovery tags be placed in the header of every page within a website that has feeds available. By doing so you will provide users and search engines alike with a simple method of being notified that you have RSS feed(s) and it will allow immediate subscription without fuss. In contrast simply having a RSS logo hyperlinked with a feed provides little or no benefit and does not provide auto-notification that a feed is available.

Furthermore it is recommended to create a unique auto-discovery tag for each available RSS feed and place them all in the header. If you think you have too many then I would recommend choosing the feeds that are most relevant to the page content.

* A WordPress plugin was noted called the "SEO Title Tag Plugin". This plugin really impressed me because it allows WordPress users to see and individually customize the title tags of every post within the associated blog; without a doubt a powerful capability since title tags play a significant role in rankings.

* If you use paid Press Release services to disseminate your latest company news then it also works to your advantage to create a separate blog specifically used for your press releases. In this regard you can use the associated RSS feed to get some free publicity by submitting it to blog directories and other blog-syndicating properties.

* If you are finding it difficult to get the word out about a particular piece of news then Greg Jarboe has a great idea for you: track down the key bloggers that appear to be driving the news in your industry and contact them with your story.

If your story interests even one of the bloggers and gets published then you could get a massive amount of publicity for zero dollars.

During the presentation of this concept Greg Jarboe utilized a powerful online tool called BuzzLogic to identify which people drove the latest news in key topics. Unfortunately BuzzLogic appears to be priced well out of the capabilities of many small businesses (at $12,000/yr minimum) so I will provide a very basic free alternative to determining the leaders of a particular topic.

Step 1) Search in your favorite search engine for the particular topic. Within the results separate the blogs from the other content. If you do not find at least 10 bloggers then try search again with different wording for the same topic.

Step 2) Look at each blog individually and look for indications of readership or popularity. For example perhaps one of the website has a Feedburner subscription counter with the blog's current readership OR take the URL of the blog and conduct a backlink check on Yahoo using "linkdomain:www. .com" (without the quotes) to see which blogs have the most inbound links. Sort these blogs according to their popularity.

Step 3) Find contact information on each site and then contact the writer(s) starting with the most trafficked blogs and pitch your news/idea/story.

Note: I am not saying the steps above have anywhere near the quality of results that a full-fledge program like BuzzLogic has but it is certainly a great place to start.

* Promote your latest blog posting by taking advantage of a popular blogger's vanity. Compliment them within your key article (somehow) using their full name and perhaps provide a link back to their website. Chances are that the blogger often keeps an eye on blog postings or sites that utilize their name. When they visit your posting there is a good chance they will read it.

General Blog and Feed Optimization Tips:

1. Providing full text feeds was noted regularly throughout the presentation as a far superior method for creating backlinks and getting found online.

2. Your blog feed should have 20 or more items never the minimum 10.

3. Provide a feed for every category your site/blog offers.

4. Ensure that you create keyword rich blog posts and ensure that your brand is well represented within the text.

5. Ensure the most important keyword/phrase is listed in the blog title.

Optimize Your Blog's Linking Structure For Best Results

1. Provide a listing of the top 10 posts within your site so the stories do not get buried in archives or category pages. If the articles are performing well it is just logical to keep them in plain view to get more mileage from them.

2. Use Tag Clouds and Tag Pages to increase the possible routes to your valuable past content.

3. If you are using WordPress as your blogging tool it is a great idea to install the "Sticky Posts" plugin which allows you to 'stick' an introduction or key post at the top of each category page.

Search Engine Optimization and How to Use It

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a means of designing a website, and its individual pages, so that you meet the requirements of a mathematical equation called an algorithm that is design to apply statistical analysis to determine how it relates to the search terms used by the search engine customers.

That is a long sentence, so let us look at the various elements that it contains. First designing a website. There is more to designing a website than making it pretty, and unfortunately there are a lot of website designers who do not appear to understand that. Before you can even start on design a site, you have to consider what the purpose of the website is. Usually to provide information to visitors on the search term that they use to reach you.

Web Pages Should Load Quickly

When you click to visit a website what do you want to happen? Do you want to see lovely flash graphics that take several minutes (or seem to) to load up, or do you want to be taken immediately to the home page. We both know the answer yet they still insist on the fancy stuff. That is ego, not practical web design.

Once you actually manage to get onto the home page, do you want some good information and easy navigation to well explained web pages, or do you want loads of graphics, pictures and nothing but line after line of adverts with some links to other pages on the site that you have to search for? We also both know the answer to that, but how often do you see pages full of adverts and graphics and little else? These pages are designed by self-professed SEO experts!

I recently had one of my customers ask to me run my eye over her home page that she had just had revamped by a professional developer but seemed not have been listed in Google. Because I look after my customers I agreed to do so free of charge, and do you know what I found? A web page that the spiders would have left the second they visited because the first text they would find would be line upon line of navigation away from the home page. When I checked the target pages, guess what? Same thing. The spiders would have been running round in circles, seeing nothing. Also no worth while titles and no headings except one in a H2 tag - no H1 tags at all.

Nobody can Guarantee a Google Position

All that from a 'professional web developer'!! What do you need to be a professional these days? Don't get me wrong, there are some good ones, though please take a piece of advice from me. Don't hire anybody that has to pay for advertising. If they can't get their own website into the top 10 for their main keyword, then how can they be qualified to do it for you? Forget the promises and guarantees. I can get anybody's website into the top 10: even to number 1! All I need do is find a unique keyword or phrase that nobody is using, such as "Top website developers in Blaenavon South Wales". I have checked that and nobody is using it! The only problem is that neither will any Google customers use it. Nobody can guarantee a Google listing position.

Incidentally, search engine customers are those that use them to find information that they are seeking. They are not advertisers on Google or people that use any of the Google services other that the search engine itself.

Keyword Density is a Thing of the Past

All SEO experts can get you in the top 10, but not for any keywords worth having. You are better doing it yourself. All you need worry about are having your keyword as part of your title (not all of it) and in TITLE tags, and use your page keyword in H1 tags as the main heading. Use it again as part of an H2 sub-heading. Use your keyword once in the first 100 characters and again in the last paragraph. Once more for every 500 words and that will do. Forget 1% -3% keyword density. Use lots of related text, but be careful of synonyms because few word mean exactly the same as others. Make sure that you make it clear in what context you are using a particular word.

Write naturally about your topic and you will be fine. Make sure that the spiders see your page title first, then the heading next. That will tell them what the most important text on your page is, and hence the topic of the page. The sub-headings will reinforce that, but only if they are in H2 - H3 tags. Forget anything more than H3.

The spiders should come across links leading from your page until it has read all your text. The lead t to where you want it do next. Attach a lead to it and guide it through your website, page by page, and avoid leading it from page to page haphazardly before it has seen the content on each page. Any website designed like the one I described at the beginning, with nothing but links at the start of every page, will be lucky to be listed at all unless it has hundreds of thousands of links coming into it.

Page Rank Might Lose its Influence

However, Google appear to be reconsidering how it views links, and perhaps web page content will be viewed as it should be - as more important than incoming links that can be contrived artificially. Follow my advice and do your own SEO. It is as easy as I have described. If you fail to get listed within two weeks you are doing something wrong, and then you might need help, but make sure you get help from somebody who wants to help you and not simply boost his or her ego.

There is more to search engine optimization than flashy pages. Spiders see in black and white, and are impatient creatures, so don't lead them a merry dance. Be obvious, tell them what your page is about and let them read your content before sending them on to the next page.

SEO is about being honest with your visitors and giving them information that is as relevant to your subject as you possibly can, but also using common sense. Look at your home page, and consider what you want to be the most important parts of it. Then think where you would want your visitors eyes to go on your page to be given the best information. You can use HTML to make sure that the search engines crawl your page exactly that way.

Do Not Confuse Your Spiders

You can lead spiders from paragraph to paragraph. Table to table, link to link. Keep in mind that if a spider follows a link it will start crawling the page you sent it to and only come back if you allow it to: i.e. provide another link back to your home page. Theoretically you could send it back and forth the between two pages in an unbreakable loop!

That is the 'website design' part, leaving algorithms, statistical analysis and search terms still to cover. These will have to be the subject of another article!

Search Engine Optimization for Real People

Search engine optimization (SEO). Does the very term strike terror in your heart? When you contemplate the process of getting your website ranked highly in search engine results, do you feel slightly less confident than you would if you were about to change your car's transmission? Well, it's understandable. There are incredibly involved things you can do to increase your website's search rankings on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Those kinds of things, you know, you hire consultants to do for you. I think they go to wizard school to learn that.

Seriously, however, every cent you spend on search engine optimization and paid search-whether it's hiring a consultant or paying per click for a sponsored listing-will be money well spent. Consider SEO as a critical element of your marketing campaign.

And it's impact on public relations? Well, according to Melanie Mitchell, the VP of SEO/SEM at AOL, 92% of journalists turn to search engines to find background information and 73% look there for press releases for their news stories. Anyway, given that...also know there are some simple, free, and easy things you can do right now (are you liking the sound of this?) to optimize your web site for unpaid search listings. Here's a short list to get you started...

Create Great Content

1. Make your website useful to your readers. In an entertaining way. And change it up pretty frequently. Keep your information fresh. 2. When talking about your business or nonprofit organization, always ask yourself, why would they want to read this? What is the benefit of our services or product to my web page readers? How are you different from the competition? Highlight those benefits in a short and sweet way. 3. In the first paragraph or two, put in that call to action. What do you want the web page reader to do? 4. Use headlines and subtitles liberally, but keep your content short and readable. Remember, the search engines only pick up html, generally, so don't put any content you want searched in java or flash. 5. Create a generous number of pages. 6. Create a blog, and add content to it twice a week. Meaningful content, of course. Not how your day is going. Try your company's press releases for starters. Search engines love blogs. 7. Create a "myspace" page and blog there, as well. If you have video, consider "YouTube." And to try podcasting, check out GCast.com.

Keyword Essentials

1. If you can, include your most important keyword in your domain url. 2. Think up the most important keywords for your business, and mention them in the title of your page, in your headline, and throughout your home page (and the rest of your website). Don't overdo it, but a little repetition of a key terms will clue the search bots into what your site is all about. One rule of thumb is for every 100 words on your web page, repeat the keyword 4 to 6 times. 3. Boldface your keywords. 4. Leave out keywords that are irrelevant to your business-non sequiturs will cause the search engine's web crawlers to ignore your web page.

Link It Up

1. Link to your own pages in your site. 2. If you can manage it, get other web sites to link to your site. 3. Write an article related to your business/nonprofit and post it on ezinearticles.com 4. Link to external web pages that are relevant to your core business...and don't link to pages that are not relevant. Target well-established, complementary web sites. Examples: trade associations; important and useful articles. 5. Make it easy for your readers to bookmark your page, subscribe to your blog, and e-mail or print your press releases. The best way to do this is to incorporate user-friendly "widgets," such as RSS feed buttons, and digg, my yahoo, delicious, and other bookmarking icons. Put these widgets right on your web page or online press release. 6. Cultivate public relations relationships with influential bloggers just as you would if they were journalists or editors.

Search Engine Optimization and Google Local

Anyone who uses the internet to search for products, services, or advice have seen the local results that show up in searching using a city, state , or zip code in their search.

Google, Yahoo, and MSN all display local results at the top of the search listings right under the sponsored listings.

We are going to concentrate on Google local results today. Do a search for "Orlando internet marketing" in Google. You will see local business results show up on the top of the search results. It displays a map with the listings marked with letters and the listing information displayed along side the map. The listing shows the company name, street address, phone number, and website link.

If you can get your ad listed in the local business listings, you are getting great free advertising. How do you get Google to display this information on your website you ask?

First, you will need to be showing in the first page for your listing. If you are not on the first page, don't worry you can still get a hyperlink under your listing with a map and directions to your business.

You will need to create a Google local account at: www.google.com/local/add/businessCenter. Add all the website information that pertains to your business that you would like Google local results to display. Google will require a mailing address to send a postcard to you that will verify the address you gave. Once you receive this postcard, you will log back into Google Local Business center and enter the verification pin on the card.

The whole process can take 4-6 weeks but is well worth the effort. The second way to get your site listed within the local directory is to just wait. If you have your business address and phone number on your site, Google should eventually display the information.

I suggest you submit your site to the business listing as you are sure to be listed within a few months; you have more control on what information is displayed, and best of all its free.

The Ultimate Keyword Optimization Guide for Search Engine Positioning

We all know it and we all do it. Whenever the typical web user needs to find something on the web, he or she will almost always instinctively go to one of the top search engines and run a search. Then, he or she will have a look at the first 30 search results returned (usually the first three pages of results), hardly ever looking beyond that. If nothing looks appealing, they will run another search using a variation of the keywords they used on the first search. Again, they will look at the first 30 results. If they still find nothing of interest, they may switch to a different search engine and repeat the process. This, believe it or not, is the typical web navigation behavior of at least 86% of all the 110 million web users out there. The question is, does your web site capitalize on this behavior? If the answer is yes for you, then no matter what a user searches for that has any relation at all to your products, they should find you even if they hadn't thought of finding you! That translates to a very high amount of daily traffic to your site. Is this what is happening for you?

We bet the answer is no. Very few web sites really capitalize on this behavior. However, you can learn how to do so. For this tutorial, we shall assume that you are in the business of selling wedding gowns. You have a web site that does a good job of displaying your wedding gowns, but like most other web site owners, your web traffic is really low and clients are simply not finding you. You have done everything you can think of, but your pages hardly come up on the search engines. What next? Well, get ready to learn one of the most effective online marketing strategies.

Gather Your Keywords

We know that the web user will think of a keyword or phrase and type that into a search form on an engine. That is his or her first step, and so it should be ours. This is a very important step! Get a piece of paper or open up your text editor and keep writing all the keywords and phrases that you think of as you go through the steps outlined below. Selecting the right keywords or keyword phrases will skyrocket your traffic. Research has shown that most people use phrases of 2 to 3 keywords when searching. People have come to learn that just typing in one keyword in a search will get them thousands of records that they just do not need. Therefore, they combine two or three keywords in their searches.

Your list should end up having about 50 or more keywords and phrases. You must write down every word that a person might use to look for your site PLUS words they may use to look for other related information or products. This is no easy task. It involves some research and a fair bit of thought. Remember, thousands of people out there looking for wedding gowns may not all think alike, look for wedding gowns directly, or even realize at the time that they can get wedding gowns on the net! To get a good list, here are the steps that you should go through. Keep your pen and paper handy so that you keep writing as you go along each step.

1.Think! Brainstorm! Sit down for several minutes and think! Write down whatever keywords or phrases come to mind. Then look at your list and see what other word combinations you can make out from the keywords you have already written down.

2. Look at your products and services and see what words relating to them will pop up in your mind. Write the names of each product or service that you deal in. These product names will also be part of your keyword list.

3. Ask your family, associates, clients, and friends what words and phrases they would most likely use to search for products or services like yours.

4. See what keywords your competitors use. See what keywords are featured on their pages and in their meta tags.

5. Be specific AND general in scope. Think of words that also describe things related to what your site is about. For example, if you sell wedding gowns, also think about other things and words related to weddings, such as honeymoon, bridal registry, wedding rings, engagements, and other wedding accessories and services. The idea here is to capture people who may be looking for other things related to weddings, whether they are directly looking for wedding gowns or not at the time. Chances are that someone looking for any wedding related information will also be interested in knowing about wedding gowns. Get the idea? This is a very powerful way of getting more targeted traffic to your site.

6. Do not forget misspelled words. People often misspell words when they enter their search terms. Include commonly misspelled words or phrases as part of your list.

7. If your site deals with a particular region, remember to include that in your keyword list. E.g. 'Los Angeles wedding gowns' if you deal in wedding gowns within Los Angeles. A lot of people will search for wedding gowns, get a big list of returned search results, and decide to add the words "Los Angeles" (or wherever else they may be interested in) to get more specific search results.

8. Use the long and short form of words, e.g. consult, consulting, and consultants.

9. DO NOT SPAM! Do not use keywords that have nothing to do with your web site. Do not list the keyword "sex" or "free pics" just because they are frequently searched for if they do not have anything to do with your web site. You will only get traffic that is of no use to you anyway because surfers will come to your site and leave angrily when they realize you just cheated them. Also, search engines are on the look out for such deceitful practices and can sometimes ban your pages for spamming. As long as you stick with keywords related to your core business, you will be fine, but do not go way out of line.

10. Now its time for some research. You now need to look at what people are actually searching for on the various engines and get more phrases for your list. Here is a list of sites that will help you out with that. When doing your research at these sites, remember steps number 5, 6, and 8 above - people often misspell words, they use different word forms, and they may be looking for a whole lot of different stuff all related to your products. Don't be fooled by Search Engine Optimization Guarantee!

Don't be fooled by so-called "optimization guarantees" that sound good in the headlines but have enough small print to be virtually meaningless. Having your web site rank high in the search engines is a science and the rules for search engine optimization (SEO) are always changing.

These companies give true search engine optimization professionals a bad name. So, even if you do not choose us as your website solutions company, we urge you to keep an eye open and stay clear of companies that guarantee #1 positioning.

Nobody can guarantee a top search engine placement, you better be sure you're not trapped by unethical seo services, spam and doorway pages that might jeapordise your website investment. What could appear to be excellent results, could sooner or later get your website penalised or banned by a search engine.

Carefully inspect the all details about the 'no cure, no pay" SEO guarantee. You should also check when the SEO guarantee expires!

The truth is that they are guaranteeing you a #1 position but not necessarily for a keyword that is competitive. For example, it would be easy to get your site to the #1 position in Google for the term Colorless Pink Chocolate.

Due to the volatile nature of search engines there really is no way to guarantee specific rankings in any one particular search engine for any one particular phrase.

To Your Success!

Why You Should Write Search Engine Friendly Copy

In the early days of the World Wide Web, traffic was king. Just get traffic to your website and hey, you were up and running. With the amazing number of websites now, there is a need to market your website, or optimise it by using search engine optimization techniques.

Getting your site noticed is a challenge. Most web users search for information using search engines. So you need to design your site in such a way to attract the search engine spiders that index your web pages in order for them to be found. So, what is search engine friendly copy?

Well it is not about stuffing your website with target keywords. Indeed, you will probably fall foul of the search engines if you do that. You do need to research your keywords but you need also to write to human beings, not just spiders. There is no point in having a highly ranked website that nobody can understand. Remember that your website has to be user friendly.

First of all, what is your website for? What does it do? What do you want your visitors to do? Do you want them to spend money while they are visiting? Or is it just an information site? This will have an impact on how you compose your copy. Bearing in mind that you are designing your website for humans to interact, it is advisable to plan the style of your written content.

Short paragraphs and bullet points will attract eager eyes, whereas lengthy essays with few breaks will drive people away. If you are selling something, you need to make your site look interesting with many calls to action and not just like an online price list. In conclusion, remember that you are trying to attract the search engines but your website is first and foremost designed for human readers.

As a general rule, any site that is written and designed well for people will be search engine friendly, so do not compromise your message to your human audience simply to make your pages more accessible to search engines. People are your audience.

You may have to pragmatically balance the two needs, but in doing so, never take a decision in favour of search engines. It is pointless getting a high ranking and attracting visitors to pages which do not communicate properly.
